Medical community medicine, also referred to as MD community practice, is a specialized and rapidly growing field within the United States. It includes a vast range of specialized areas, including pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology, infectious disease and many others.

In order to pursue a degree in community medicine, you must first complete a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college. The coursework for this level is typically centered around four years, although there are programs that last for as little as two years. There are also programs that may only last a year. After graduation, you must be licensed in order to practice medicine in an MD community setting.

There are many different types of community medicine and these range from general medicine and preventive medicine through specialized areas like geriatric care, family medicine and pediatric medicine. The different area of study can vary from one community medicine school to another.

These doctorate degrees can provide a high paying career in this highly specialized area. Once you have earned a degree, you will be able to work as a full time practicing dentist in a facility, as a research fellow, or as a member of a committee of the American Dental Association.

As your doctor’s career progresses, you may also wish to consider a career change. You may want to pursue a teaching position in a school of medicine, a research position or a teaching position in a school of dentistry. Once you have your graduate degree and have spent the required time in residency in the field, you can begin to seek employment in a teaching capacity.
